Our middle/high school addition project is a masonry bearing type of building, so we had a large number of bar joists supplied by Northland Steel. The largest ones were the new gym joists. They are 100' long. The sharp corners and curvy roads in town had made it a challenge to get the stage joists to the site. They were 81' long. Now we had to get two truckloads of these big 100' joists to the site. My contact from Northland was Tim Quill. After telling him of our concerns, he set up a meeting. He arranged for the trucking company rep, the steel erector, and himself to meet with me at the site and check out the access through town and to the site. After picking his route, it was determined that the best way to go involved backing the long trucks down a street a little more than one-half mile. With the help of a few local citizens from the school maintenance department and local & state police, the delivery was a success. It also happened in a very timely manner. This helped because of school bus schedules that had to be kept and kids who walk home from school who were not exposed to the trucks. Once again, Tim Quill was on site making sure everything went off as planned.
